Bank statements for a visa: what to show, what not to do

A bank statement is one of the most carefully read documents. The consul checks not the "amount on the account" but the pattern: regularity, sources, stability.

What period is requested

Usually 3-6 months. For the UK and the US sometimes up to 6 months. If you have several accounts, show the main one — the one your salary goes through.

What looks convincing

  • Regular deposits (salary) of roughly equal amounts.
  • Gradual accumulation, not a single large transfer a week before applying.
  • An average balance that covers the declared trip expenses (a minimum of 50-100 EUR per day for Schengen as a benchmark).
  • Reasonable spending: groceries, utilities, cafes — everyday life.

What raises questions

  • Large deposits with no clear source.
  • Withdrawing a large sum of cash right before applying (to show "cash").
  • A negative balance or constant overdrafts.
  • An account opened 2-3 weeks ago with a large sum straight away.

Format

An official statement with the bank's stamp and a certified signature. Kaspi Bank, Halyk, Forte all issue these. For Schengen it is usually in English or with a translation (depends on the country).

If your income is "under the table"

This is harder. One option is to show regular card transfers from an employer or realistic savings. Trying to "draw up" a statement is an almost guaranteed ban.

A sponsor

If a parent or spouse pays for the trip, it is enough to show their statement plus a notarised letter of commitment plus kinship documents. Sponsorship is normal practice.

Note: specific statement requirements differ by country. Verify with the embassy website.
